Editorial design, or a short introduction to post-Gutenberg times.
Publications as future-proof values
The design and execution of editorials and publications goes back to past centuries of humanity’s history. Gutenberg’s name comes up when we talk about books, for he was the one that invented a process that enabled cost-efficient, easily replicable and readable pages to be printed.
In the 21st century, printed materials have remained staples as they are truly timeless and valuable carriers of information. They may serve purely as a vehicle, but we can add to their characteristics for a heightened sense of value. In the digital age, books have not become obsolete, rather they’ve become available to an even larger audience at will.
A common request from our Clients at explicit® is the creation of printed and online catalogues. Physical editorials usually require more time, for aside from designing the layouts, we have to define the method of their binding and printing as well. This means we have to account for at leas a few months of production, from start to finish.
So how do we begin?
We find it is important to have a birds’ eye-view of all design projects, and creating editorials is no different. Communicating about a Client’s expectations is key, regarding the type and lenght of the material, as this could ultimately affect all print-related questions, which also influence the first steps of designing the layouts. So following such ideation, the explicit® colleagues create layout examples until they satisfy the Client’s requirements. These model spreads encompass the imagery, type, the scales and weights, in other words the editorial’s character. We prepare the visual content, and once we are done the content formatting begins.
Continuing the design process
After the design of all images and text, and the agreement upon the exact number of copies in accordance with the Client, the explicit® team once again specifies the type of printing technology and bindig method. The editorial’s length usually influences the ultimate solutions in relation to the press. Printing may be done with offset or digital technologies.
The next important step is the material’s proofing, followed by its submission to the press. Each and every book is a timeless mark in history. Our experienced designers at explicit® are happy to share this journey with you, and create valuable design products.

An “editorial’s dress”, seen by everyone
Besides the method of printing the spreads themselves, the most visually striking part of any printed material is its’ cover. The cover may be hardbound, embossed, foil stamped, fabric covered, or even printed on recycled paper. A small surface filled with endless possibilities.
